We are Brisbane’s independent architecture consultancy for people who are about to build, renovate or develop.

Many of the clients who come to us arrive with a feeling rather than a brief. A sense that their home is no longer working for them. A property full of possibility they cannot yet see clearly.

Mweya works in the very beginning stages of your project — the moment where the right thinking changes everything that follows. Every engagement is led by James, a Director level architect with over 25 years of practice across award winning residential, commercial, cultural and civic projects in Australia and internationally. What we offer is genuinely independent: no agenda beyond yours.

There is a moment, early in every building project, where the right guidance changes everything.

Mweya helps you define
your vision and budget

Understanding what is genuinely possible on your site, within your budget. Knowing which approvals your project requires and in what order. Identifying which consultants you need and when to engage them. Building a brief that means every architect or builder you speak to is quoting the same thing.

One focused session before you engage anyone else can save months of back and forth and thousands of dollars in unnecessary cost.

Our Process

We come to you. Before any conversation about design, vision or budget, we spend time at the property — observing how the space sits on the site, how light moves through it, what the structure allows and what it resists. James has spent twenty-five years reading buildings at this level of detail, on projects ranging from private residences to landmark civic and cultural institutions. What he finds here shapes every recommendation that follows.

01 - The Site Visit

A focused two-hour session, held after the site visit, where we work through your project in full and in-person. James brings to this conversation the same rigour and clarity of thinking he has applied across award winning projects at the highest level of the profession — now directed entirely at your project, your site and your vision.

We cover your design ambitions and lifestyle needs, what the site can genuinely support, a realistic understanding of budget and sequencing, which consultants you will need and in what order, and the approvals your project is likely to require. Nothing is left as a vague next step. By the end of the session you have a clear picture of what your project actually is — and what it will take to realise it properly. From this session we produce your Mweya Brief.

02 - The Consultation

The Mweya Brief

The most important document in the early life of any building project.

Every consultation produces a Brief: a complete, bespoke document capturing your design vision, site constraints and opportunities, budget parameters, consultant requirements, and a clear sequencing of decisions ahead.

It is not a template. It is a personalised document produced specifically for your project, written and delivered to a standard that reflects the significance of the decision you are making. Every Brief is produced by Spirit and James and delivered as a professionally designed digital document.

Clients use it to engage an architect or builder with clarity, align with partners and advisors, and stay anchored to their original intentions as the project evolves. It is the document that gives every subsequent decision a foundation — and the reason most of our clients say they wished they had come to us first.

About Us

James

CO-Founder

With more than 25 years of experience, James has delivered award-winning mixed-use, cultural, civic and educational projects across Australia and internationally. Formerly a Principal at FJC Studio in Sydney, he has led significant projects including 111 Castlereagh St and UTS Central, alongside major cultural works such as the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery Redevelopment and the Warships Pavilion, as well as numerous residential, university and cultural projects.

Known for his design rigour and clarity of thinking, James sees potential in a space that others overlook. What sets him apart is his ability to understand what a client wants, often before they can fully articulate it themselves, and to translate that into a spatial vision the client can finally see clearly. He opens up possibilities in a space that most people would never have imagined, turning an idea into something tangible, considered and entirely their own.

Spirit has spent her career at the intersection of interior design, architectural communications and business development, working alongside developers and homeowners on the delivery of premium residential projects, and driving growth for some of Australia's leading architectural practices. She understands instinctively the gap between what clients want and what they are able to articulate, and brings that understanding to every Mweya engagement. Every Mweya Brief is written by her.
